Although the most well-known laser surgery is LASIK, there are a few different procedures that can be used to correct refractive errors. Each procedure offers unique benefits, and which procedure is best for you depends on a variety of factors. Your eye care professional will evaluate your eyes and explain your options to you.
LASIK is the most common and well-known laser corrective surgery. A small incision is made on the outer layer of the cornea (called the epithelial layer), creating a thin flap that is folded out of the way. Then, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea based on what type of correction you may need. The flap is then laid back down on the cornea, where it will heal over the next few days.
PRK is a procedure that removes the epithelial layer completely; then, the inner corneal layers are gently reshaped using an excimer laser. The outer layer usually grows back in approximately 5 days.
LASEK is similar to both LASIK and PRK in that an incision is made to separate the epithelial layer from the underlying layers. However, instead of a flap, like in LASIK, this outer layer is removed entirely and set aside. Once the cornea is reshaped, the epithelial layer is repositioned and left to heal.
